We know already that Maki's Dad is the reason they can afford their lifestyle and likely is the reason his mother can afford to take two entire months off work. I believe his actions would be MUCH different if he got to spend more time around his father whom STILL works as we know a ridiculous amount to provide for him. He falls short of seeing the full sacrifice of both parents.

i do think the father is right about him not being able to understand until he's older. obviously asa child you don't ever want to see your parents grow apart especially since he's living with his mother who never moved on while his father did. he feels like his father left them behind when that's how it goes. they've been divorced for a long time and trying to stay attatched to a past like that will only scruff up your future. he clearly still holds a lot of respect for his mother and obviously still lvoes his son but he moved on from her. you can't treat him as the villain for simply moving on and finding love again because your mother didn't. you onyl really understand that with time and experience. obviously we would need to know more about how it ended between them to get the full story but especially since they had a grueling custody battle which the father lost there's no reason he would want to still have a connection to his ex wife past their son since he can only see him once a month and is barely in his son's life at this point. this is definitely a realistic reaction of a family broken up by divorce because it does happen like this.
