I honestly thought the false diagnosis was setting up the perfect moment for their relationship to take the next step.
When Sasaki believed he had to quit smoking forever, it suddenly made every cigarette they shared feel precious. For the first time, both of them were forced to face the possibility that these little moments behind the supermarket might come to an end.
I imagined Yamada finally finding the courage to say something like
"Sasaki, all this time we've spent smoking together... I realized those moments became the best part of my day. At first, you were just a regular customer, then a smoking buddy, but somewhere along the way you became someone I genuinely look forward to seeing. I don't want tonight to be the last time we sit here together. I don't want these moments to end when the cigarettes do. The truth is... I've started to like you. Not just as a smoking partner, but as someone I want beside me in the days to come. So, would you let me stay by your side?"
I feel like it would have been such a beautiful culmination of their journey—from complete strangers to companions sharing quiet conversations behind the supermarket to two people slowly realizing they've become important to each other. The scene already had all the emotions needed for a confession like that.
I seriously thought this could be it, but nah. Well, I am relieved in a way that we have potential for further seasons, but imagine this would also have been a beautiful conclusion.
